Rules Questions / FAQ Charge
« Last post by Biscuit on July 26, 2013, 09:49:31 AM »
Gav, only made this topic as I can't reply to Banj under FAQ feel free to delete it as and when:

Quote from: Banj
When moving models during a charge, starting with the model closest to the target unit, move it so that it travels as far as it can into the target unit to get into base to base contact with the furthest away enemy model it can reach. This move allows the charging models to move over the bases of models in the unit it is charging to reach the furthest away model from it and if the charge move ends with the charging model over the base of enemy models then those enemy models are moved the minimum distance needed so that no bases are overlapping by the owning player. However once a model is in base to base contact with an enemy model, the model can not be moved to make room. The ability to pass over enemy models only works on models in the charged unit, it does not allow a charger to pass over model of an enemy unit that is not its charge target.

No mention is made of other enemy units in this revision, it reads as if you cannot engage at all.

Here's my suggestion based on the conversations and then I'm going to shut up.

"When moving models during a charge normal rules for movement are ignored.

Instead, starting with the closest model to the target unit, measure the charge distance as a straight line through the target unit and move the model over intervening models along this line until you can place it in BtB with the furthest reachable model in the target unit without ever coming into contact or passing over any model from another enemy unit that isn't the target. At this point your opponent shuffles the other models in the target unit a minimal amount to allow you to place the charging model, these shuffled models should also end up in BtB with the charger.

Now that the furthest model has been reached you can move your other chargers using the same system except you can now engage units other than the target as long as:
i) the line of charge passes through the target unit,
ii) the majority of charging models are engaged with the target.
iii) no subsequent charger is moved further than the first charger.
Your opponent must still shuffle models to make room but cannot move any model that is already in btb with a charger."

That is not a flaw as far as I can tell as the old rule did the same.

You just could not hit base to base contact with an enemy model of another unit prior to furthest enemy model it can reach.

Nothing in the old rule forbid hitting base contact with a 2nd or 3rd enemy unit at the same time as hitting base contact with the charged unit, it was just forbidden to do so beofre that contact was made, which is still the case as you have to reach base to base contact with the furthest possible away enemy model of the target unit whilst not being allowed to travel through other units.

Banj,

Just had a read of your proposed amendment and there's a flaw.  It is possible to come into contact with a second (or even third) unit with the charge so long as the furthest model in the target unit is engaged.

The Beorn should never be hiding. He leads from the front! Well, mine does and he normally munches his way through a lot of models!

I think I would level the Unmann units out a little, make them 5 and 4 models.

Two Rifans, awesome. Abifian with them is even better. Smash the earth first the charge in with a Rifan. RRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH BITE, BITE, SMASH, BITE, SCRATCH, POKE!

Of course ...

I'm pouring over my rulebook trying to get my head around the abilities of each unit and how they can effect other units. Jumping in with both feet seems to be the best way to learn.

Presumably the Beoron will be hiding behind the 3 Unmanm and the two Niwain behind the unit of 6 Unmann?

I was digging through my old boxes and I found 2 old can style starter sets and a number of blisters for the Orcnar. Apparently I was not doing enough demos when I used to be in retail... Suffice to say I have enough for a 400pt force, actually enough for a 570pt force but lets not go mad.

1 Beorn      64
2 Niwian      16

3 Docga      69

6 Unmann   84
3 Unmann   42

2 Eotan Rifan   86
1 Eotan Abifian   40

This will require the purchase of 2 Niwians and the dice, of course, but I do have another 3 Docgas, 3 Grymann and yet another Rifan so I can do a little bit of mixing and matching.

Guidance welcome!

Official FAQ / Temp Topic: Making the most of the Charge
« Last post by Banjulhu on July 25, 2013, 03:55:10 PM »
The current wording in the rules is:

When moving models during a charge, starting with the model closest to the target unit, move it so that it travels as far as it can into the target unit, but does not come into BtB contact with another enemy unit prior to the furthest enemy model it can reach. If models in the target unit need to be shuffled slightly to allow space for a charging units models, then this is allowed. However, when moving models, the owning player of the charged models move them and once a model is in BtB contact with a charger, the model can not be moved to make room.

To allow the charging through the models of an enemy unit as intended I think the following would be suitable.

What do you think Gav?

Q. When charging into an enemy unit models are required to move into the enemy as far as possible to reach the furthest enemy model away from the charger, are we allowed to move over enemy bases to achieve this?

A. Yes, unlike a normal movement which requires you to move around enemy models if you wish to get past them a charge move allows you to move over the bases of enemy models in the unit you are charging.

The Making the Most of a Charge rule on page 26 should read [WIP].
