“Remember lads, you have the element of surprise here. They’re expecting you to fight with swords and shields, they’re not trained to deal with pitchforks and broomsticks!”
Baron Dangle addressing a Serf horde at the battle of Rogancourt.
At the forefront of the Ridendean hordes are the Barons, considered amongst the mightiest champions of Queen Morri. Only the most courageous nobles can ever hope to earn enough favour to warrant them worthy of the title. Despite their renown the Barons are somewhat unfairly ranked at the bottom of the hierarchy amongst the upper classes according to the Ridendean peerage system and are succeeded in rank by Dukes and Earls, amongst others. On the war ravaged battlefields of Relicia there is no greater authority though and it is their will that holds the armies together.
Like most creatures that are found on Relicia, the Ridend make their best efforts to protect themselves from harm at all times and are naturally fearful of death. The major difference between the Ridend and the other free peoples though is that the Ridend are actually more fearful of being considered dishonourable than they are of death and many of them believe that it is better to fall in battle than risk bringing shame upon ones family legacy.
The Barons expect nothing less than absolute respect and obedience from the lowly ranks of the Serfs right through to the young nobility who might one day succeed them. All Ridendeans strive to live by the virtues laid out in the honourable code but none are more devoted to it than the Barons, they are magnanimous heroes, pure in both mind and body. Where others grow restless and nervous, the Barons remain patient and resilient and will perceiver until the bitter end if necessary.
In battle the Baron stalks the fields, directing the brave Ridendean warriors onward into the thick of the fighting. Accompanied by a loyal pair of Men-at-arms, one bearing the Barons own personal standard, the other acting as a musician or signaller, the trio are an inspiring sight to behold.
Such divine oaths of loyalty are commanded by the Baron that those who swear to serve them will not hesitate to march head on into certain doom if they should be ordered to do so.
