Xanawang Winterland
« on: June 02, 2012, 04:48:07 AM »
Greetings and Welcome to my lil' WiP corner!
I recently started making a few pieces of scatter terrain to get my creative juices flowing for my up and comming vaettir force. (tyvm indiegogo campaign) and after seeing 'littlejoes' awesome project. thought i might post the results here for all of you to comment and critique.

I'll be aiming for a very dark and brooding, wintery theme. With large rocky spires and twisted dead trees, similar to some of the vaettir terrain concept art floating around these parts.

anyway without any more padding for time. heres some pics i took...apologies for the crappy qualitity, 'tis an ol' camera unfortuantly.
first up my re-purposed 40k modular table:

next is a small hill:

my forest:

and my first attempt at a evil-ish looking spire:

and a Wip:

well lemme know what you all think. constructive criticism is always welcome

sure i can get ya some pics.. ill do one better heres a lil tutorial for the sharp rocks/ jagged spires:
Materials: -styrofoam
               -MDF board for basing
-And something to seal the foam and fill gaps, i used waterbased acrylic poly filler (cheap from a hardwear store) or u could also use acrylic  gel painting medium which is availble from most art supple stores.
Tools: -a craft knife/box cutter
-hot glue gun (could use pva glue too, but i was after a quick dry time)
         -a sharp metal rod
-a lighter, and or a box of matches

start off by shapeing the styrofoam into large pointy chunks, with your craft knife. slice a few ruts/and mess up the edges to further resemble a rock face.

then fix them to whatever your using for basing or straight onto the table if your doing a fully landscaped lay-out. I used the glue gun for this part its also quite useful on larger pieces for keeping large spikes fixed to the main spire.

next, using your lighter/matches slightly scorch the foam. do this outside.... my god! it stinks terribad make sure you burn all the sides and be careful not to set the thing on fire.

then using a heated metal spike add the pores

seal and fill in any gaps with the acrylic filler slightly watered down & base to suit your needs

That's gonna look aewsome!

If the horizontal overhang is gonna be load bearing it may be worth putting a couple of doweling rods through it for support down the road, assuming you haven't already done so.

Looking forward to seeing this develop.

First reaction: very interesting and looking great so far. Nice tutorial!

I support the supporting rod comment from Qalpha. The spires have a nice texture and are clearly inspired by the artwork. It is a fresh and innovative take on terrain but I would take the pieces outside to do the lighter trick and leave it there for a while to take care of fumes. I do this when spraying, because besides the smell it cannot be healthy. I think I will give this technique a try with some portals I have been planning to make.

I like it a lot and will be following this closely.

Hello, Up-Date time!
Qalpha great idea mate, i'll definatly have to do that for my next large over-hang. i think this one should be fine tho. theres really not much room for anything bigger then say, a small infantry.
been a little slack this past fortnight or so, but managed to finish up the tall spire, and get a healthy start on 2 more pieces.
'ere some quick photos:

might have to work a lil' more on those trees roots, im not to happy with how they meet the ground.

and my second dead/frozen forest:

this is still very WiP but you get the idea... im thinking of adding a burnt-out camp fire or perhaps a ruined caravan.

and last is a stone henge-eske piece

well as always lemme know your thoughts.
