This was a game between two roughly 240 point forces as follows

Vaettir

1x unit of 4 Varrier
1x unit of 3 Varrier
1x unit of 3 Varbres
1x unit of 2 Varstan

Britanan

1x units of 6 Troopers
1x units of 7 Troopers
1x unit of 3 Dragoons
2x units of 3 Grenadiers.

The Vaettir had only had one outing before and were deemed to be too expensive as well as a tweak to some abilities needed. These changes allowed a more balanced force to be built. The new Morale rules were tested as well.

The Britanans set up first because of their superior unit strength and set up with a unit of troopers in a ruined building with a unit of Grenadiers supporting. The Dragoons formed in the centre with the second Grenadier unit to their right and the second trooper unit beyond them, facing a large hill.

The Vaettir placed the smallest unit of Varriers behind a building on their right and placed their other unit in a small copse near the foot of the large hill. These were supported by both the Varbres and Varstan units.

The Vaettir won the initiative and forced the Britanans to move first. The Britanans consolidated their position in the ruin whilst the dragoons moved forward toward the hill with the grenadiers. The troopers on the right followed ready to give supporting fire.

The Vaettir pushed forward taking advantage of any available cover, what else could a close combat force do? The units on the left made it to the base of the hill unscathed.

The Dragoons and Grenadiers moved onto the foot of the hill with the supporting troopers shuffling toward it. The Britanans opened fire on the appearing Varriers cutting down two of their number, but the Varriers didnt seem to care until a second volley reduced them to a single member who withdrew behind the hill, shaken.

Meanwhile, the Britanan forces in the ruin were struggling to get through the rubble and it seemed to affect their aim as well, while the small, diversionary unit of Varriers inched out across the open ground in a flanking manoeuvre.

The Varbres and Varstan got their bloodlust up and came over the crest of the hill into a barrage from the grenadiers and some fire from the troopers. One Varbres fell and a Varstan took a wound. The Varbres charged into the grenadiers, their additional pace carrying them into the foe. Grenadiers are tough and they withstood this attack allowing the dragoons to charge in but the Varbres love to dance and dodged the blows. This allowed the Varstan to join the fray. This was the first time this troop type had seen action so we all watched with baited breath what the outcome would be.

The dragoons took a beating. They lost two of their members but the remaining fellow stood firm. However, the force of the onslaught made itself known to the unwary grenadiers and one of their number died in the melee. This was a result of the Stone Cleaver ability that the Varstan have, where a hit allows a second roll to be made against another model within 3cms. As two hits were made, two of these additional strikes could be made, only one was successful. The last dragoon died in the next round of combat.

The Varrier flank attack was sprung too early. They charged the troopers in the ruin but were just out of reach by a centimetre. This left them exposed in the open, but the troopers couldnt hit them and their position prevented the Grenadiers drawing a bead on them. Lucky! Next move brought them into contact with the troopers, who slowly died.

The Grenadiers managed to extricate themselves from the ruined area and they opened fire on the advancing single Varrier, who had recovered his composure whilst hiding in the copse. He died in the blast from the grenades launched at him, but he had managed to draw the fire away from the Varstan unit.

The Varstan, having survived another volley from the nearby troopers closed in on the Grenadiers who were having a hellish time trying to kill off the rather annoying Varbres. The ensuing combat saw a Varstan die. This, however, allowed the remaining one to change direction and charge the second Grenadier unit. His attacks were reduced because he utilised his Stone Defence ability in case he found himself exposed to more volley fire. He only had a single wound left, but he still managed to kill a Grenadier.

The troopers had now joined in the battle with the Varbres, who were doing a sterling job tying everything up. They tried to surround them, realising that this would be the best way of killing them off, but the Varbres still managed to stay out of reach. The troopers finally managed to kill one of their foes, but they had lost three of their own. This was too little too late, though, as the Varstan killed the last grenadier of the second unit and the small Varrier squad had finished off their trooper opponents and turned their attention toward the remaining Britanans.

The Morale rules worked well enough, but one or two changes were decided on such as a unit taking a test when down to a quarter strength would rarely come into force and so changed it to one third. On the whole, the morale rules worked very well.

I was a little surprised about how well the session went actually. I expected the Vaettir to still be a little unbalanced but the game seemed to swing one way then the next with each activation of a unit.

Gripping stuff to watch. Good to read the report!

I have to agree to an extent. When you consider that the Varstan hadn't been used before, they worked extremely well. I found that the balance was very good and the game swung partly due to some dice roll results and mostly to player's actions and decisions. This means that they arre pretty much right, in my eyes.

After two games with the vaettir, one using them, and one facing them, I would summarise them thusly.

Varriers - hit hard, and are hard to hit back at in melee, but are threatened by ranged attacks.
Varbres - ANNOYING. First itteration of their profile, they were as imprssive as a soggy tissue. Now, whilst they can kill things on the charge, after that they are rather poor in combat (except for against troopers....). However, they DO NOT die!!!! and can clog up a unit, or three!
Varstan - Kill them whilst they close in on you (which isn't easy). If they get into melee with a unit, prepare to start packing that unit away!

Vaettir are expensive though, so when facing them you will almost always have more models and probably more units, so working out your activation order is important.

As Al said, the Vaettir list as it currently stands seems fairly well balanced.... but not enough games with them yet to draw a firm conclusion.

Some people would say that's because I'm a genius......
